Home Self Help Relationships Obsessing over cheating possibility without any reason. Obsessing over cheating possibility without any reason. Wasn't sure to post this in the relationship or anxiety forum. I was typing a really long post about every little detail of my problem but I think I should generalize it more. Basically my girlfriend works at a kitchen and works with a bunch of people.
XX is this guy that I was kinda of friends with before but not really much now. He works with my girlfriend. He's single. Were all around 19 years of age. My girlfriend doesn't have many friends, so she's starting to kinda become friends with this guy, which is cool because I know him and stuff but my problem is that I can't seem to stop obsessing over the fact that my girlfriend could be cheating on me if she wanted too.
I know the guys single and young, I've been with my girlfriend for almost three years, and I know your going to say well don't you trust her? I do trust her but the anxieties and obsessions of the fact that what if she decided she wanted to be with someone else. I really don't ever say anything to her, because I don't want to accuse her of something she most likely never did. She never accuses me, I'll be with her friends all the time when shes at work and never ever mentions her being uncomfortable with it.
The other night my friend was talking about taking me out on a guys night out and getting wasted at a bar and my girlfriend was totally fine with that. Is that a sign that she really trusts me or is it a sign that she doesn't care because she wants to cheat and doesn't care if I'm put in a position where I could possibly cheat so that she feels even.
My girlfriend calls me everyday, I see her every night. For some reason I just can't stop obsessing over the fact about being cheated on.
It just really bothers me, to the point where I think about it so much that it feels that its actually a reality. I've had multiple nightmares that included my girlfriend cheating on me. I just don't know what to do anymore, it wears me down thinking about it. Anyway I really had to blow off my anxiety attack and get someones opinion before I freak out again. Sorry bout the 20 same topics, something about the mail server error came up and I didn't even know my post actually went through until now.
It sounds like you're in a state of high anxiety, and that means that it really isn't about what she does or doesn't do anymore. You are in fight or flight mode, which means you see danger everywhere. Even in the things she might NOT be doing, such as if she doesn't call you at a certain time, you'll start to wonder what's wrong.
Whereas beforeyou felt so anxious, you wouldn't have worried about it. So I'd say you first need to deal with your anxiety. Then get to the root cause of why it's come up like this. Did something happen in your relationship recently? NOt a bad thing, but even a good thing Sometimes the increasing commitment can be what we want but also bring up fears of abandonment or loss that we didn't have before.
It makes us very vulnerable to deeply love people, to be attached to them. It can cause anxiety. PoppyGoodWill wrote: It sounds like you're in a state of high anxiety, and that means that it really isn't about what she does or doesn't do anymore. Matt, I'm exactly like you and I've been married for 12 years!!!! Same as you, shes not at all bothered if I go out with my friends.
In my case, I think it is me. I get worked up anxious for no reason at all. But, hey, I guess you know too, its not nice is it? One piece of advice. Be aware that it is you thats got the problem, not her. Shes just probably being totally normal. And, be careful you dont end up accusing her of things that shes not doing - sure way to knacker your relationship So what exactly is it that you're afraid of? I mean Now what? Are you going to completely lose it, explode, be struck with an uncontrollable rage fit that will make you do horrible things?
Are you going to become so sick over the idea of your gf getting it on with some random dude that you'll become terminally ill? Are you going to turn a vile green and grow tits on your back? Or what?! You see, when you're scared, you're always scared of something specifically, and being cheated on in and by itself is just not something that is frightning I mean you have absolutely no involvement in it, and frankly you probably wont even know it's happening until later, maybe, years later So it must be something else that you're afraid of Matt, Mate.
I'm the same. Still cant help myself thinking that sometimes its not this and that I'm being a bit of a mug and getting made a fool of. I'm same as you there I been married 12 years so I guess we're way past the honeymoon stage. My wife sort of takes everything in her stride and cant see what I stress about.
At the end of the way, there are a few things that keep me going a bit and are worth thinking about:- 1. Has she ever given you any REAL evidence of cheating?
Do you really think she'd cheat on you? Not sure what to suggest. One book that helped me a bit is called Jealousy by Paul Hauck. Sort of puts things into perspective really Do you take any meds BTW?

Dear Therapist,. I say mostly because there is one problem that always threatens to ruin everything. I have had multiple incidents where I deceived my girlfriend by flirting and secretly communicating with other women, and have had two incidents where I actually kissed other women. Both times my girlfriend found out, and it created incredible upheaval for us. I have been lucky in that I have convinced her to stay, telling her how badly I want to change I do and what I will do to make this work. I decided to start therapy after the last incident. But I thought that after the first time.
